Tempers are lost as a result of these conditions and this year is no exception. This time it featured NFL greats Darrelle Revis and Brandon Marshall. They had been competing against each other in camp all day, with Revis jamming Marshall at the line of scrimmage. After he beat Revis Island for an 80 yard touchdown, they talked trash at each other, with Brandon reminding Darrelle how the cornerback struggled against Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in 2015. More insults came and when Revis lined up for the next play, Marshall hit Revis’ shoulder pads with a swipe. New York Jets teammates broke up the scuffle before it got worse but those 2 players continued jawing at each other for the rest of practice.
It’s training camp. These incidents happen all the time. Players lose their cool in extreme temperatures and boring repetitions. As Darrelle said after practice “Every year guys get after it. It’s football. It’s good for us to compete the way we did.” After the scandal that happened last year when linebacker Enemkpali punched quarterback Geno Smith, New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles toned down this event: “They were going at it all day. It got a little chippy. I mean that’s just part of football. It’s camp. You can go to every camp probably around the league and you’re going to hear the same thing. Everybody gets chippy. It’s nothing to write home about.”
Of course he still liked their competitive spirit: “I love it. It’s football. We’re not here judging a beauty pageant. You want some players that are chippy and know how to play, and keep it clean, but you want them on the edge.” Gang Green was smart to extinguish this flame before it got out of control and prevent either Revis or Marshall from sustaining any major injuries before the season started. This bout was broken up by a technical KO.
