When an opposing team scores less than 20 points, the other team is expected to win. However, even though the New York Jets held the Los Angeles Rams to 9 total points, Gang Green still lost the matchup. All of the blame can be put on the Jets offense, which was only able to score 6 points. Head coach Todd Bowles decided to start rookie quarterback Bryce Petty in place of Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was dealing with an injury.
“Fitz wasn’t completely healthy, even though he took reps in practice. Bryce took the majority of the important reps. It was good to see him out there and Fitz was just going to be used as an emergency.”
New York’s offense had a promising start in the 1st quarter. Even though the Jets began on their own 1 yard line, with rushing from Matt Forte and timely passes from Petty, the team drove down inside LA’s 20 yard line. On the critical 3rd down and goal from the 4 yard line, Bryce threw to Brandon Marshall, who then lateraled the football to Bilal Powell, taking it in for the score. This drive (9 plays for 99 yards lasting 4:06 minutes) was the longest one not only for the Jets season but also the longest drive of the entire NFL season. The lone blemish was Nick Folk missing the PAT, which would have given NY a 7-3 lead.
However, after this drive, the offense sputtered and was not able to move the chains again. Petty was not on target with his receivers several times during the game. In the 2nd quarter, on 3rd down and 14 from the Jets 32 yard line, he overthrew Robbie Anderson at midfield, which the WR could have caught and run for a TD. In the 3rd quarter, on 2nd down and 11 from the Jets 32 yard line, the QB missed a wide open Quincy Enunwa across the middle, which the WR could picked up the 1st down. Because of these misses, the offense converted on 3 of 12 third down attempts, a terrible 25% success rate.
With New York’s defense not allowing a TD the entire game, the Jets still had a chance to win the contest. With 2:00 minutes left in the 4th quarter from the Jets 42 yard line, on 2nd down and 7, Bryce threw to Enunwa but Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree stepped in front of the receiver and intercepted the ball to end the game.
Overall, Petty completed 19 of 32 attempts (59 percent) for 163 yards a TD and an interception and had a quarterback rating of 70.2. He was not able to connect with Brandon Marshall (4 receptions for 15 yards) nor Quincy Enunwa (1 receptions for 7 yards) the whole afternoon. Because Gang Green’s offense was not able to pick up 1st downs, their punter Lac Edwards kicked the ball away an NFL season high 8 times back to Los Angeles. With Bryce not able to lead the offense and score touchdowns, the Jets wasted a valiant effort from their defense and lost by 3 points to the Rams.
