“Because I’m old”
This is what the 31 year old cornerback Darrelle Revis said when he was asked about his struggles against the Los Angeles Rams. The same problems occurred again against New England.
Everything was going so well in the beginning of the NFL matchup. From the opening series, Sheldon Richardson broke through the offensive line and chased Brady, causing the quarterback to throw it at the receiver’s feet. This set the tone for the rest of the game. The Jets only allowed 35 total yards in the 1st quarter and the Patriots did not score points in the 1st quarter for the first time with Tom as the QB this season.
In the 2nd quarter, after Ryan Fitzpatrick’s touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall over cornerback Malcolm Butler, New York had a 10-0 lead over New England. On the next series, Brady drove his team to the Jets 8 yard line. On 1st down and goal, Leonard Williams rushed from the edge, causing Tom to throw an incomplete pass to the running back James White. On 2nd down and goal, Richardson tackled RB Dion Lewis on a running play behind the line of scrimmage for a 2 yard loss. On 3rd down and goal, the pressure from Williams made the QB throw the football away. A Stephen Gostkowski field goal made the score Jets 10 Patriots 3.
But then Gang Green’s defense got cold. After Butler punched the ball out of receiver Robby Anderson’s hands and the Patriots recovered at midfield, Tom took the offense to the Jets redzone. On 2nd down and goal, the QB hit rookie WR Malcolm Mitchell for the TD in the back of the endzone, with Darrelle trailing behind. Muhammad Wilkerson, Leonard and Sheldon could not get any pass rush, letting New England drive 7 plays for 50 yards in 3:17 minutes. The Jets defense allowed the Pats to score 10 points in the last 4:16 minutes. The score was tied at 10 at the half.
After Fitzpatrick’s TD throw to Quincy Enunwa in the 4th quarter, it was Jets 17 Pats 16. Brady started at his own 17 yard line with 5:04 minutes left. On 2nd down and 10, he hit Julian Edelman for 24 yards against Revis. And then a pass of 16 yards to Dion Lewis. On the critical 4th down and 4 from the Jets 37 yard line, Tom threw to James White, who barely picked up the 1st down as he was tackled by linebacker Darron Lee. And then Gang Green’s defense gave up a huge play of 25 yards to WR Chris Hogan down the middle to the Jets 8 yard line. At 2:00 minutes on 1st down and goal, Brady found Mitchell again on an out route for the TD as Revis was trailing the WR, putting New England up 22-17. On the Jets next possession, Chris Long got past the tackle and stripped Fitzpatrick of the ball, ending New York’s comeback.
Darrelle Revis was responsible on 3 key plays: the 2 TDs to Mitchell and the 24 yard catch to Edelman in the 4th quarter. When Brady targeted Revis for 4 catches on 5 targets for 41 yards and 2 TDs, the Patriots QB had a 140.4 rating.
Even though the Jets defense caused Tom to have his worst QB rating in 2016, they broke down in the 2nd half. And they did not sack Brady in the whole game even though they had 9 QB hurries and 4 QB hits. This was the 3rd time in 2016 that Gang Green did not get a sack in a game. The collapse of Darrelle Revis and the Jets defense was the reason Gang Green gave up a 10 point lead to the Patriots and lost the game.
