Disgruntled Jet

Last week, New York came from behind to upset the Chiefs at home. The Jets traveled on the road to Colorado in NFL Week 14. Would Gang Green make another comeback against the Denver Broncos?

This was supposed to be a winnable game for the Jets.

The Broncos had a 3-9 record and had just lost eight consecutive matches before facing New York. And yet, another deficit against an opponent to start the 1st quarter of the game.

Last week versus Kansas City, the Jets were already down 14-0 after only 5 minutes had passed to begin the game.

This time around, New York was trailing 10-0 by the 1st quarter against Denver.

On the Jets first possession, McCown fumbled the football at his own 23 yard line from a blitz from linebacker Brandon Marshall. The Broncos converted on the turnover with a Siemen touchdown pass to Demeryius Thomas. A 31 yard field goal from their kicker McManus gave them a 2 possession lead.

There was a moment of fear as McCown was injured in the 2nd quarter. Upon scrambling up the middle on 3rd down, he was hit by Aqib Talib and Jamal Carter near midfield.

On the next series, backup quarterback Bryce Petty stepped in and passed for 2 plays. McCown returned to the lineup and drove the offense to Denver’s 39 yard line. He threw a pass to Robby Anderson at their 15 yard line but safety Darian Stewart stepped in front of the receiver for the interception, ending a scoring opportunity for Gang Green.

A 53 yard field goal by McManus with 37 seconds left in the quarter had the Jets trailing 13-0 at the half.

In the 3rd quarter, the offense of New York continued to sputter. The Broncos converted the Jets punt into a rushing touchdown by fullback Andy Janovich, giving the home team a 20-0 lead.

As the quarter was winding down, McCown injured his left wrist on a pass play and was taken to the locker room. This time the move to Petty was permanent, with Josh not returning to the game.

For the final quarter, Bryce was not able to drive the offense down the field nor generate any points at all. The Jets eventually lost 23-0 to Denver.

Gang Green was anemic against a team that was in shambles. Their offense only mustered 40 yards in the 1st half while the Broncos had 146 yards. The Jets scored zero points in the first 2 quarters.

McCown was the main culprit for the offense struggling on the road. Before he left the game with an injury in the 3rd quarter, he was 6 of 13 attempts for 46 yards with an interception and a fumble.

New York had 59 rushing yards and 41 passing yards for a grand total of 100 yards for the entire game. This was the 2nd lowest total in franchise history. Entering the game, Gang Green had a chance at making the playoffs at 5-7. But with this horrific shutout, they were eliminated from the postseason.
