Brandon Marshall, Jay GrudenIn 2015, New York Jets receiver Brandon Marshall had 109 receptions, 1,502 yards, 14 touchdowns and scored 223 fantasy football points. Here’s why you should draft Marshall in the 1st round in 2016:

The Quarterback

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick always looks Marshall’s way first as soon as the ball is snapped. Brandon is the # 1 option before Eric Decker, the tight end or the receiving running back. Fitzpatrick targeted him 174 times, an average of 10.875 per game. This high amount of volume was one of the reasons why this wide receiver had 109 receptions last year. In 2015, Marshall led the NFL in end zone targets which was why he had 14 touchdowns (also an NFL league high). As the go to guy for Ryan, Brandon will once again get his fair share of receptions, which will translate into more fantasy points.

The System

Marshall plays in the spread offense used by Chan Gailey, Gang Green’s offensive coordinator. While other NFL teams are balanced and run the football, the Jets pass the ball more than 50% of the time. Even when the situation is 3rd down and 1 yard to go, Gailey still calls for a passing play over the traditional running play. This high amount of passing plays means that Brandon will get more receiving yards just like in 2015. Also, Gailey uses 3 WR sets more than any other team in the league, implementing passing routes that confuse defenses and isolate Brandon in open space. This is one of the reasons why this WR averaged 13.8 yards a game, making big play after big play.

The Schedule

Cincinnati Bengals. Buffalo Bills. Kansas City Chiefs. Seattle Seahawks. Arizona Cardinals. These are the defenses that the Jets will face Weeks 1 to 6. Not only were they the top 10 defenses in 2015 but these 5 teams also were the top 10 in offense in the NFL. These offenses will cause problems for NY’s defense and put New York in deficits, which means that Gang Green will have to come back in these games. Gailey will no longer run the football and will call more passing plays, which benefits Marshall. This is why he had 9 receptions for 108 yards and 10 fantasy points in a blowout loss against the Oakland Raiders last year. The New York Jets losing to these playoff teams means that Brandon will stack his fantasy numbers.

Brandon Marshall has many factors in his favor to produce huge fantasy points in 2016. His QB, spread offense and schedule will give him ample opportunities to get receiving yards and TDs. Because he will have the same fantasy numbers as in 2015, he is worth drafting in the 1st round in Fantasy Football drafts. Marshall is a WR1 that has the capability to score more than 20 points a game and carry a fantasy owner to the playoffs.
