After the New York Jets overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14, Gang Green was riding high heading into their matchup against the Miami Dolphins. However, the Jets were in for a rude awakening.
Everything started off well for the 2nd year quarterback of New York. After throwing a 49 yard touchdown to rookie Robby Anderson at the start of the first quarter, Bryce Petty was leading his team again on the next series with the Jets already leading 7-0. Facing 3rd down and 4 from Miami’s 14 yard line, Bryce Petty dropped back to pass, only to get stripped of the ball by defensive end Cameron Wake, who blew past the right tackle. With Ndamukong Suh recovering the ball, New York squandered a scoring opportunity in the red zone.
In the 2nd quarter, Petty once again led the offense to the Dolphins 27 yard line. On 2nd down and 10, Bryce snapped the ball and threw it to …Cameron Wake? Instead of rushing the passer, the defensive end had dropped back into coverage, fooling the young QB into throwing to a supposed open lane. Once again, the Jets came away with no points in the red zone.
Going into the 3rd quarter, Gang Green was trailing 20 to 10, when New York began on its own 21 yard line after the kickoff. Snapping the football on 1st down and 10, Petty lobbed a deep pass to Robby Anderson, which was picked off by cornerback Tony Lippett. QB Matt Moore used the turnover to go on a drive that ended with a TD to tight end Dion Sims.
Going 20 of 36 for 235 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs and a fumble, Bryce Petty had a terrible day. The Jets passer had trouble reading coverages and was unable to sustain drives. To add even more insult, Bryce got injured at the start of the 4th quarter when New York’s offensive line stood still as the ball was snapped and let Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh go past them and crush Petty like a sandwich. Ineffective and with a bruised chest, the QB left the game.
When asked how Petty played against Miami, Todd Bowles said, “Not well. He had two turnovers.”
When the head coach criticizes your game, you know you are to blame for the loss.
